Obiecujący 17-letni licealista Light Yagami (Raito) znajduje tajemniczy notatnik zwany Death Note. Jak się okazuje, należy on do Boga Śmierci imieniem Ryuuk i posiada pewną właściwość - po wpisaniu do niego imienia i nazwiska dana osoba umiera w ciągu 40 sekund czasu ludzkiego - równierz w ciągu 40 sekund należy podać oczekiwaną przyczynę śmierci. Jeśli przyczyna śmierci nie zostanie opisana, osoba ta umrze na zawał. Istnieje jednak szereg zasad dotyczących stosowania notatnika, jedną z nich jest konieczność znajomości prawdziwego imienia i nazwiska oraz twarzy potencjalnej ofiary. Po wpisaniu imienia i nazwiska, Light postanawia wykorzystać notatnik do własnych celów - stworzenia utopii, gdzie prawo będzie przestrzegane, a on sam będzie bogiem. Aby to osiągnąć decyduje się pozbyć wszystkich kryminalistów. Wkrótce światem wstrząsają nagłe zgony przestępców, które przypisuje się osobie/grupie o nazwie Kira. Międzynarodowe organizacje policyjne zaniepokojone sytuacją i narastającą popularnością Kiry, postanawiają odkryć kto za tym wszystkim stoi. Do akcji wkracza L, enigmatyczny detektyw uważany za największego geniusza wśród śledczych. Zaczyna się gra w kotka i myszkę - kto pierwszy odkryje tożsamość przeciwnika, wygra.
